"i love how everyone always assumes that since i’m vegan, everything i eat is healthy. and also organic."

So true, I'm also vegan, (and pretty chubby, too). I love bringing baked goods to pot lucks; people will always come up to me and tell me how great it is and how they can't believe it's good for them! It's not like I left out the 3 cups of sugar and the cup of veggie oil, people! It just doesn't have eggs!

Spicy Sweet Chili Dorritos! Woot!

That's good that so many other people educated him about veganism. He might have gotten tired of hearing it, but now he sure knows that honey is not vegan :) Hopefully they'll change the sign soon or start making real vegan muffins.

The honey issue really bothers me. A lot of people say they're vegan and still eat honey. (Which, to me is not a huge deal. I'm a bit of a pragmatist and would rather everyone just stop eating meat, dairy and eggs than quibble over honey). But the problem is they want to be called vegan. That's like the pescoterians who want to be called vegetarian. No, I'm not the vegan police and I'm not going to take away anyone's vegan card, but I'm going to call those people beegans not vegans. And they can get annoyed or whatever, but I refuse to change THE definition of vegan to suit their honey fetish.

These honey-lovers claim veganism is about abstaining from using sentient beings and since they don't think bees are sentient, they consume bee products. But that's not what veganism is. Veganism is about abstaining from using animal products. And bees are animals. So it's not vegan. Moreover, who knows if they're sentient or not? We don't really know what bees feel or think. I think we should be agnostic about it and play it safe. Which is worse: a) to cause pain when you think you're not causing pain or b) to abstain from causing pain even if no pain is caused either way? The ethical answer is b.

BEE-sides, we don't need honey. It really is just a luxury item and there's not great justification for it's use.

Great post, and something that I complain about frequently! One of the aspects of veganism that I love so much as that we see all life as equal - no species is any more superior than the other. It's a beautiful thing.

Oh I totally agree. I mean, even as a stunt it is pretty stupid and OF COURSE it's not going to be received well by the public....maybe I'm just not artistic enough to get it, but, well, I DON'T GET IT!!

Thanks for the comment! I read that it might be a hoax as well, but I couldn't find any definitive information either way, other than the photos. But we all know those can be faked - remember Bonsai Kittens?

Even though its existence is unconfirmed, I think the reaction to Vargas' "art" speaks volumes. I decided to write about it because even if it turns out to be a stunt, the overwhelming outrage it's caused remains real.

Hey!
I read in the Guardian that the whole dog thing was a stunt - that was the only reliable news source I could find on it.

That said, I agree with you - we treat dogs and cats and other companion animals much differently than we treat dogs, and it's not right...but it also took me a LONG time (27 years almost!) to realize that. I think compassionate people just need to be educated, and hopefully their compassion will eventually overtake their taste buds and convenience!
